PNG Announces Inaugural PNG Climate Investment Summit – Shaping the Nation’s Future in Sustainability
25 November 2025
Papua New Guinea will take a major step towards climate leadership with the launch of the nation’s first Climate Investment Summit on 8 December 2025, set to convene during PNG Investment Week (PNGIW25) at Sydney’s International Convention Center.
Following on from PNG’s eye-catching participation and advocacy at COP30 in Belem, the summit is expected to draw regional and international attention, serving as a dynamic forum for business, government, and community leaders to spotlight new investment opportunities and practical solutions at the intersection of climate and development.
With an impressive lineup of speakers, the Summit will feature high-profile experts and policy makers whose collective experience will help chart PNG’s course toward a climate-resilient future. Renowned climate scientist Professor Tim Flannery leads the program with a keynote address, while Minister Simo Kilepa (PNG’s Environment, Conservation & Climate Change) will showcase how PNG is advancing national adaptation strategies.
“I am honoured to announce that I will be delivering the keynote at the Inaugural PNG Climate Investment Summit. Having known and worked in Papua New Guinea for over 45 years, this carries special meaning for me and this opportunity is a great honour. I will be speaking on ‘Confronting the Climate Challenge and Seizing Our Opportunity’ , a theme that reflects my deep belief that PNG has a promising and sustainable future,” said Prof Tim Flannery BA MSc PhD ASS.
Voices from Australia, the World Bank, IFC, Bank of PNG, and KPMG will join PNG regulators and experts to offer insights on finance innovation, regulatory trends, and the real potential for sustainable growth as well as look at active investment case studies in areas as diverse as mangrove conservation, circular waste management, and resilient infrastructure.
A central aim of the Summit is to catalyse international investment into climate solutions developed and delivered by PNG players, with strong involvement from communities most impacted by climate change. The sessions will underscore success stories from local leaders and community-based projects, demonstrating how climate investment can drive inclusive progress and unlock new opportunity for all Papua New Guineans.
Highlighting the importance of this event, Anthony Smaré, Convenor of the Climate Investment Summit and President of PNG CORE-the host of PNG Investment Week (PNGIW25) said, “Climate investment isn’t just a global agenda-it is at the heart of Papua New Guinea’s development priorities. By hosting the Climate Investment Summit during PNGIW25, we are putting climate investment as a core investment priority for PNG, alongside our other traditional economic pillars for investment. We are also putting PNG on the map as a regional hub for innovation, finance, and action. I encourage all stakeholders-whether you are shaping policy in government, driving change in business, or delivering solutions on the ground in PNG, Australia, or the Pacific-to join this summit and drive forward the climate agenda together.”
As part of PNGIW25, the Climate Investment Summit delivers a unique chance to connect policy, finance, and action on the most critical issues facing the nation and the region. It promises to be a defining moment for those eager to help shape PNG’s future in the global climate conversation.
Registrations are now open. Whether you’re involved in government, business, finance, or community initiatives, don’t miss the opportunity to gain firsthand insights, build new partnerships, and make an impact.
